Week 13 - The making of an entrepreneur

This week I had the opportunity in reading about Randy Haykin and some great tips and tricks he shared about entrepreneurship. Choosing a partner was one of the topics that Haykin talked about that stood out to me.  This is something that I have thought a great deal about because I have been screwed in business ordeals in the past from lifelong friends. Like Haykin, I have been able to be a lifelong learner myself and see things that have helped me to be a better businessman in the long run. When money gets involved in business transactions people can tend to change. I saw it with a good friend of mind when there was a large sum of money at stake. He had promised he would take care of it but didn't in the long run. It was something that I felt like I couldn't prepare for but I feel like it's an important process in choosing a partner.  It helped me to understand that he wanted to bring on a partner so he'd have a balanced perspect...

W12 - A Hero's Journey - Chapter 7 - Rest

Grateful for the opportunity I had to read the hero's journey as it helped me and inspire me through the principles that were taught. There were a few parts in the book that really stood out to me more than the rest. Speaking of rest, in chapter 7 it talks of rest and how it is needed. There was a quote in that chapter that stood out to me and it reads, " All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy." The meaning behind that quote states that "Our senses become dull, our minds and bodies worn down, by constant hard work unleavened by appropriate leisure." (pg 91) The chapter goes into detail how you will have more of a clear mind going back into work with leisure time and taking time to relax from your work environment. I completely agree with that statement as I've seen how work can be so much of my focus that I put it as my top priorities where I shouldn't. I should be putting God first in my priorities as I've seen as I put God first every...

Week 11 - Hopkins Family issue

It really got me thinking when I read about the mini case study on Hopkins family issue. This was the issue -  "For as long as he could remember, David Hopkins wanted to be a successful high school football coach. He even dreamed of joining the college ranks one day. In late 2000, after having achieved an enviable win-loss record at a smaller school, he was named as the head football coach at a large West Texas high school that had a long tradition of winning state championships. On the same day, his wife filed for divorce. She cited Hopkins’s many days on the road as the primary reason for their separation, and announced that she and her four-year-old daughter were moving back to her East Texas hometown. If you were Hopkins, what would you do? Ponder this question and briefly discuss your answer below." If I was Hopkins I would evaluate my love & passion and see what's most important in my life. For me & my priorities, I put God, family & then work. ...

Questions to ask your mentor

This week I have prepared many hours on what I should be asking my mentor/ entrepreneur.  Here is just a few questions that I wanted to ask my mentor/entrepreneur. These questions have been on my mind and I hope to ask a few of them in my next phone call.  1. How did you land your current role? 2. Did you envision this is where you would be five years ago? 3. Can you tell me about a time when you had a difficult boss? How did you handle it? 4. How did you learn to embrace failure? 5. What’s the most important leadership lesson you’ve learned and how is it valuable? 6. Tell me about a recent setback and how you recovered? 7. Was there ever a job position that you applied for and got, but you weren’t 100% qualified? 8. How did you build the skill of always speaking so engagingly in front of others? Something also that I wanted to ask is, "where can I improve in my life?" I'm always looking to progress and become better and I could use all the tips and tricks I could ...

Week 08 - Hang in & Hang on

Something that I learned from this week was not to be in the rush of things. I read the talk "However Long and Hard the Road by Jeffrey R and Patricia T. Holland. The talk starts out with this person asking them for their tuition back because they didn't get married in all fun. The theme of the start of the talk was talking about those that are worried about their social life & how some people are struggling. Jeffrey R Holland talked about keeping your head up when struggles come up & to have a sense of humor. Also to not waist your time walking on your lower lip about what is not. He asked that we become excited about our chance to grow and develop and become. Was really happy I had the time this week to read the talk & really help understand perseverance & really to endure to the end with excitement and happiness for the future.

Week 07 - Developing Habits/Goals

This week I have really been focusing on my future and exactly what I need to do with my life. I have come to realize that I need to develop crucial habits in my life to help me get where I want to be in life. this week I have been reflecting back on  time here at college. It has really been hard to see how college has been beneficial to me in reasons of education. For me college has been one of the best networking times of my life & I have made friends at college that will be my friends forever. If college has offered anything to me thus far that was valuable to me it would be the friendships I have made. I say this because in school we go to college to get a degree and ultimately get a job in a career field we desire. After thinking about what I want for my life, I want freedom. I want freedom in my time & what I can make. I got thinking about my life and how if I went through with my degree that I would end up getting a job in some corporate america job...

A Hero's Journey

We were asked in our online class to watch a 22-minute video called "A Hero's Journey." What I took away from watching the video is that life is precious. Life can be taken away from us at any given moment and I feel we really need to not take our life for granted. We have a journey here on earth and we have one life to live it up. We are here to learn, to grow & to enjoy life to the fullest. I feel like each of us are on different paths and we are all in it together. In his talk, he talked about how he believed that some people in the very room that he was in, will be people who will change the world for the better. He talked about how he wanted to make a difference & he didn't know how to start. He also asked himself if he really has what it takes to succeed in life. He mentioned that we all have missions here on earth. A mission that will succeed our wildest dreams. In the talk, he said we will be able to succeed if we find our entrepreneurial calling. Most...
